China Visa

A visa is required for Canadian visitors and most other nationalities. If there is a Chinese Embassy or Consulate General nearby your place, you can go and obtain your Chinese visa in person. Please note that the Chinese Embassy and Consulate Generals don’t receive any mail-in services. One can also apply for china visa via the china visa application service center, they are located in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. If your place is far away, you can ask us for help.

Basic Requirements When Applying For a Chinese Visa

  • Original passport with at least 6 months from departure date and available blank pages for visa.
  • Original old passport if the passport issue date of the current passport is on/after 2015.
  • One properly completed Visa Application form signed by the applicant. Download the Visa Application form here.
  • One recent China Visa color photo affixed to the Visa Application form. Please download the Visa Photo Requirement here. Photos from photo booth or home-shot photos are not acceptable.
  • Relevant documents for different types of visa: (others deemed necessary by the Visa Officer)
  • Applications by mail or courier are only accepted by the china visa application service center. Please kindly refer to www.visaforchina.org. Return service by mail after the visa is processed is not available. The applicant must come in person or may authorize someone (no authorization letter is necessary) to apply on his/her behalf and pick up the visa at the consulate.
  • A single entry visa is normally valid for 3 months from the date of issue. A double entry visa is usually valid for 6 months. The applicant may apply one or two months in advance, or one or two weeks before the trip to avoid visa expiration.
  • After the applicant enters China, if his/her actual length of stay is longer than the visa given, he/she must apply for extension of stay at the local public security bureau before his/her visa expires. The applicant will be fined or subjected to other penalties if he/she stays beyond the specified date.

Type of Visa and Requirements

Business Visa (F-Visa):

An official invitation from the appropriate Chinese government departments, companies or institutions that are authorized to request the Embassy or the Consulate Generals to issue a visa.

Tourist / Family Visit (L-Visa):

A confirmation letter from a Chinese travel agency, or a confirmation from a hotel in China, a copy of the round-trip tickets to China, or an invitation letter from a relative in China. Please note that the Embassy and Consulate Generals do not issue individual visas for tourists to Tibet. All applicants travelling to Tibet need to contact their local travel agency to obtain confirmation for group visa of no less than 5 people from the Tourist Bureau of Tibet (TTB).

Student Visa (X-Visa):

1.Foreign Student Visa Application Form “JW201″ or “JW202″ issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

2.An enrollment letter from the receiving university in China.

Employment / Work Visa (Z-Visa):

1.an Employment License issued by the Chinese Labor Ministry. For applicants to be working in an academic institution, a confirmation issued by the Chinese Foreign Experts’ Bureau.

2.an official invitation issued by a Chinese government agency.

Transit “G” visa:

A valid visa of the country of destination and an air ticket showing transit through China.

Journalist Visa (J-1 or J-2 Visa):

Please first contact the Press Office of the Chinese Embassy or consulate.

Crew Members of unscheduled flight of private air crafts or vessels, please first apply with appropriate Chinese authorities for landing/docking permit.
